Karen Khachanov v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head

While these two haven’t played on the tour, there has been one meeting at the exhibition circuit, having featured in the Hurlingham competition in 2018 on grass. Dimitrov had won the best-of-three sets match with a match tie-breaker in the third.

Khachanov Hopes to Move on From Antwerp Antics

It was a forgettable European Open campaign for Khachanov as he crashed out in the second round of the competition there and not before he was at the receiving end of some underwhelming umpiring.

Having a match-point against Daniel Evans in their quarterfinals, Khachanov crashed to a defeat but in the process was involved in a few arguments with the chair umpire including one that saw him smash his racket against the side net.

While the issue was sorted after the match, with Khachanov admitting he went overboard, the fact is he wasn’t at his best and his Brit opponent took full advantage of the situation.

Earlier, even in the second round following an opening round bye, Khachanov was stretched to three sets by Zizou Bergs, a player ranked outside the top 500. He came back from a set deficit to beat Bergs 6-4, 6-4 in the next two.

Khachanov had earlier made it to the quarterfinal of the St. Petersburg Open as well, before going down to Milos Raonic. He now faces a tricky first round opponent in the form of Grigor Dimitrov.

Dimitrov’s Clay Form Better Than Other Surfaces

Dimitrov’s had three occasions this season where he has won three successive matches in a tournament before bowing out. Two of them have come on clay and as recently as before the start of this indoor hard court swing.

At the Rome Masters, the Bulgarian managed to make it to the quarterfinal which included a win over Jannik Sinner. This was followed by a fourth round appearance at the French Open before he went down in straight sets to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Come the Antwerp Open, however, Dimitrov won just the second round match, following an opening round bye, and then made the semifinal following the withdrawal of Milos Raonic because of an injury. He was then sent out in a tough three-setter by Alex de Minaur in the semifinals, making it 2-3 on win-loss on this surface.

The Bulgarian’s generally poor record indoors since 2017 when he won the Stockholm Open and the ATP Finals means he will have some catching up to do against Khachanov in this one.

Khachanov v Dimitrov Prediction and Tip

Interestingly, at the time of writing, Dimitrov is the favourite, starting out at 8/11 to win it as compared to 1/1 for a Khachanov victory. Very tempting odds those for Khachanov, who we reckon holds a very slight edge over his opponent here.

Tip: Khachanov to win: 1/1 (bet365)
