It has been a post-pandemic season to forget for Paire but he continues to try and push on, attempting to feature in this tournament in Astana and register just his second win since the lockdown was lifted.
Paire’s own fitness has been questionable obviously, probably from the after-effects of the viral illness he endured but the fact he has been able to get back to playing longish matches bodes well for the Frenchman.
At Roland-Garros, he managed to finally register a victory – his first since the end of February this year – but then went crashing in the second round to Federico Coria. A fortnight later, playing Dennis Novak at the Cologne Open opener, Paire went down in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
The Frenchman did have a decent time indoors last season, making it to the semifinal at the Metz Open and winning a few other matches elsewhere. At the Challenger level, Paire has won a few titles indoors too, three of which came in 2015.
Can he use all of that to get some confidence under his belt at this competition?

Kukushkin Struggles Past Delbonis
A first round ouster at the St. Petersburg Open notwithstanding, Kukushkin went into his first round match here against Federico Delbonis as a heavy favourite, 1/3 to win it. When he lost the first set in a tie-breaker, memories of the opening defeat in the previous tournament would have come back for the out of form Kukushkin.
That he came back strongly to complete a three-set win over Delbonis would have added to his chances of going deeper into the tournament.
Not that Kukushkin needs to think too hard or look back too much, given how well he had done indoors last year. The former world number 39 defeated Denis Shapovalov, Andrey Rublev and Ugo Humbert in Marseille to make it to the final before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Kukushkin’s form has fallen by the wayside since but the advantage he has here is he is playing another struggling opponent. Things could get very interesting.
Paire v Kukushkin Prediction and Tip
Given how their results have gone in recent times, we think this contest will be a lot closer than what the markets indicate – Paire is 13/8 while Kukushkin starts a favourite at 4/9. A three-setter looks likely.
