Dominic Thiem v Andrey Rublev Head to Head
On tour, these two have met thrice and Thiem leads 2-1. This includes a Vienna Open meeting in 2017 which Thiem had won in straight sets and one at the Monte-Carlo Masters the following year that had led to a three-set win for the Austrian.
Rublev’s only win came at the Hamburg Open in 2019, but having beaten Thiem on clay would have been a proud achievement for the Russian, given the latter’s record on the surface.
More recently, Rublev and Thiem featured in two matches in an exhibition competition at the Thiem’s 7 Invitational and both won one match apiece.

Thiem Thumps Garin in Round Two
After a straight-set but not as straightforward a win as he would have wanted in the first round, Thiem did not waste too much time over his second round victory over Cristian Garin.
The Austrian was quick off the blocks as he broke Garin in his very first service game, and then raced off to a 3-0 lead. While he had more opportunities to double his advantage, that proved to be enough for him to take the opening set 6-3.
And if Garin thought he was going to be able to exploit any possible chinks in the Thiem armour, he didn’t find any.
In fact, it was Thiem who drilled home the advantage with a break in the fifth game and then doubled it with another in the seventh before serving it out the next game to complete a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Thiem had earlier been pushed to 6-4, 7-5 by Vitaliy Sachko in his opening round encounter, but as far as form goes, the Austrian has already won the US Open, and made the quarterfinal of the French Open in the post-pandemic season. In some ways though, this would be one of his toughest matches in recent times.

Rublev’s Run Shows No Sign of Abating
Well, Rublev did add another win to his already burgeoning list of victories this season but it came courtesy a retirement. Jannik Sinner, who has already been tipped by Novak Djokovic as a future world number one, was expected to give some sort of a fight to the in-form Rublev but he retired from the contest in the first set because of an injury to his right foot.
What the win did was to improve Rublev’s recent record to 16-1, with title wins at the Hamburg Open and the St. Petersburg Open.
Those two titles made it four tournament victories for Rublev this year, having also lifted the trophies in Doha and Adelaide in the process. Not to forget, Rublev had pipped Thiem in the final of his own exhibition tournament during the pandemic break.
Rublev is 9-1 on indoor courts this year having only suffered a loss in the quarterfinals of the Rotterdam Open to Filipp Krajinovic. With victories over Denis Shapovalov and Borna Coric in the last fortnight or so, Rublev now would be looking to up the ante and claim an even bigger victim – the world number three, US Open winn.er

Thiem is 3/5 to win this while Rublev starts off at 6/5 but this will could be a lot closer than those odds. Expect a three-setter and one that even goes the distance in the third.
