What Happened at the 2022 Pan Pacific Open?
The 2022 edition of the tournament, played after a two-year gap, was won by Liudmila Samsonova, who overcame a tight final against China’s Zheng Qinwen. She won 7–5, 7–5.
Samsonova’s good form saw her start out as an unseeded player as she defeated the eighth seeded Elena Rybakina in the first round, Wang Xinyu in the second and then shocked the third seeded Garbine Muguruza in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinal, Samsonova sent Shuai Zhang packing to make the final.
Zheng, on the other hand, shocked the top seeded Paula Badosa and fourth seeded Veronika Kudermetova on her way to the final.
There was no Pan Pacific Open played in 2020 thanks to the pandemic. The 2021 edition of the WTA Tokyo was also cancelled as the pandemic continued to rage on in the country.
Top seed and local Naomi Osaka wasted no breath in winning the 2019 edition of the Pan Pacific Open by beating unseeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the final in straight sets. Earlier, Osaka had run through all her opponents without a sweat too, dropping no sets en route her title victory.
Fourth seeded Angelique Kerber showed some sparkle in winning two matches and making the semifinal where she lost to Pavlyuchenkova 3-6, 3-6 while Osaka defeated Elise Mertens in the other semis.
