About the ATP Finals

Just as is the case with the ATP Finals, the top eight players in the world based on the Road to the Finals Rankings are divided into two groups of four each. Each of the players feature in three group matches with the tournament following a round-robin-cum-knockout format.

At the end of the group stage of the ATP Finals, the top two players from each group qualify for the finals and that’s followed by the title-decider. The tournament is played for both, the men’s singles and doubles titles.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is the singles defending champion after he overcame a loss to Rafael Nadal in the group stages to qualify for the semifinal where he defeated Roger Federer. In the final, he was involved in a three-setter with Dominic Thiem which saw a final set tie-breaker won 7-4 by the Greek.

ATP Finals 2020 Draw

This year’s ATP Finals has the usual suspects other than a maiden appearance for Russia’s Andrey Rublev and Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman. Australian Open winner Novak Djokovic leads the competition as the world number one while Rafael Nadal, who captured the French Open title without dropping a set joins in as well in the other group.

Roger Federer misses out because of injury while both, the 2018 and 2019 winners, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas will be a part of the competition.

The two groups have been named as Group Tokyo 1970 and Group London 2020 in order to celebrate the 50 years of the competition.

Group Tokyo 1970

  • Djokovic
  • Zverev
  • Medvedev
  • Schwartzman

World number one Djokovic leads this group, which also has Daniil Medvedev, the winner of the Paris Masters recently, the Cologne Open winner over successive weeks, Alexander Zverev and Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.

Djokovic might not have had the best end to the regular season with a crashing out at the Vienna Open in one of his worst results in a long time but he will start off a heavy favourite in this one. He will, however, face some competition from Zverev and Medvedev, both of whom have the ability to upset some of the top players on their day.

Interestingly, Zverev and Medvedev had faced off as recently as a week ago at the Paris Masters final and the Russian had won a three-setter to lift his first title of the year. The result of their match could decide who joins Djokovic in the semifinal.

Clay-court specialist Schwartzman will hope he can push the other three but we sense he will do well to win one match.

Prediction

Djokovic and Zverev to qualify for the semifinals.

Group London 2020

  • Nadal
  • Thiem
  • Tsitsipas
  • Rublev

World number two and French Open winner Rafael Nadal will hope to regain some of the form that saw him capture his 13th title at Roland Garros. Because Nadal’s struggles outside of clay this season have been more pronounced than usual and he would want to end the season with a corrected course.

Nadal has the slightly easier of the groups than Djokovic, with Tsitsipas’ form having taken a beating to go with a few fitness woes for him in recent times. If Tsitsipas doesn’t come in fully fit, Nadal’s real test will come from Dominic Thiem, who had earlier won his maiden Grand Slam title.

And don’t discount the debutant Rublev either, who enters the tournament on the back of five ATP titles. The only issue would be the pressure of expectation playing against three of the best tennis players in the world after the kind of season he has had.

Prediction

Nadal and Thiem to qualify for the semifinals.
