What Happened in the 2022 ATP Vienna?

After the defending champion Alexander Zverev withdrew from the tournament because of an ankle injury he suffered at the French Open, it was the top seeded Daniil Medvedev who won the title by defeating Denis Shapovalov in the final.

Medvedev overcame the loss of the first set in the title-decider to clinch the tournament 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

This was after none of the seeded players made it to the semifinals, with the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz and Cameron Norrie losing in the second round.

Alexander Zverev won the 2021 edition of the Erste Bank Open when he overcame Frances Tiafoe in the final. He won 7-5, 6-4.

Starting out as the second seed, Zverev had his tough moments in the competition against Alex de Minaur and Felix Auger-Aliassime but in the end, he came through them and lifted the trophy.

Tiafoe had started out as a qualifier and ended up defeating the top seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas on his way to the final.

In a tournament consisting of players of the pedigree of Djokovic, Thiem, Tsitsipas and Medvedev, the 2020 ATP Vienna was won by Andrey Rublev. Rublev defeated Lorenzo Sonego in the final 6-4, 6-4 to win one of the five titles he clinched in the season.

It was Sonego who crushed Djokovic’s hopes as well, defeating him 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinal, while Rublev ended the second seeded Dominic Thiem to move into the semifinal. Medvedev also made it to the quarterfinal while Tsitsipas was sent packing by Grigor Dimitrov in a second round encounter.
