Anett Kontaveit v Veronika Kudermetova Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between the 23rd-ranked Kontaveit and her 46th-ranked opponent, one at the ITF level and the other on the WTA circuit. Kudermetova has won both, with the first victory coming in the first round of the Moscow ITF competition indoors and the second at the 2018 Hertogenbosch Open on grass.

Kontaveit Aiming to Build on a Solid 2020

Kontaveit did not end the 2020 season too well as she crashed out in the second round at both, the Rome Open and WTA Ostrava while losing to Caroline Garcia in the first round at Roland-Garros.

That, however, shouldn’t dim her efforts before that. It was a year which saw Kontaveit reach her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal – at the Australian Open early in the season. This was followed by another fourth round appearance at the US Open, her joint-best at the tournament.

And in between all of this, there were four successive wins at the Fed Cup, a quarterfinal at the Cincinnati Open and her best performance of the season in Palermo. Featuring in her first tournament after the pandemic break, Kontaveit managed to make it to the final only to go down to Fiona Ferro on clay.

The Estonian now resumes her campaign with a tough one given her record against her opponent but with a potentially, mouth-watering clash against Elise Mertens in the third round and second seeded Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals for the winner here, this could well be a match to watch.

Kudermetova with Modest Returns in 2020

Having begun the 2020 season ranked 42nd in the world, Kudermetova ended not so far away from that by the year-end. She begins the year ranked 46th, having finished 2020 with a couple of solid performances indoors.

These included a run to the quarterfinal at the Ostrava Open after having started off as a qualifier, and another one to the same stage at the Linz Open as well.

Earlier, Kudermetova’s top performance for the post-pandemic season had come at the Cincinnati Open where she reached the third round which included a shock win over Karolina Pliskova, but a first round exit at the US Open and another second round loss at the French Open seemed to have punctured some of the early showing.

Having shown what she is capable of in 2019, a year which saw her clinch her first WTA title and finish the season on a 48-26 win-loss record in all tennis, Kudermetova will now hope for a stronger return in 2021. She does have a difficult opener against a player ranked 23 places above her.

Kontaveit v Kudermetova Prediction and Tip

While Kontaveit is a favourite, we expect Kudermetova to come out fighting and push her opponent in this opening round encounter and take off at least a set.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
