Ivo Karlović v Roberto Quiroz Head to Head

This will be the second meeting between the two players.

Ivo Karlović won their only previous meeting in a third set tiebreak. That came in a 2018 Calgary Challenger matchup. Additionally, that match was on an indoor hard court.

Karlović Serves Himself Some History

41-year-old Karlovic made history on tour this weekend. The veteran became the oldest player to win a match since Jimmy Connors did so in 1995 at the age of 42. Karlovic achieved this after he defeated Pablo Andujar 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

Coincidentally, Karlovic turns 42 in a month and may even break Jimmy Connors’ record.

That, however, was not his only record of the day. Karlovic hit 27 aces, which equaled his own record for most aces at the ATP 250. He still also possesses the record for most career aces on tour, showing that his serve has also gotten better with age.

Besides all those records, even more impressive for Karlovic was the fact that he came into the match as a massive underdog against Andujar. However, he played well from the onset and benefited from two converted break points to win the first and the third set.

Having already won the tournament back in 2015, the Croat shouldn’t be discounted from doing so again and serving us some more history.

Quiroz Shines Against Rubin

Quiroz continued his run from the qualifying rounds with a straight-sets win against American Noah Rubin.

The first set was the closer of the two sets. Rubin broke Quiroz first in the set’s third game to go 2-1 up, but the Ecuadorian then broke the American twice in a row in between a four-game winning streak to go 5-2 up.

However, Quiroz got no set-point opportunities, and Rubin won four games in a row to go 6-5 up. Quiroz broke Rubin to force a tiebreak, which he then won 7-1.

That momentum seeped into the second set where he gave Rubin no break points and capitalized on 2/3 of his break points to win the second set 6-3.

A win against Karlović will give Quiroz qualification to his first-ever ATP quarterfinal.

Karlović v Quiroz Prediction and Tip

A rejuvenated Karlović is still the favorite in this tie and should be strong value to notch the win in this one. Quiroz, however, seems likely to win at least a set and could even give the Croat a slight scare; giving some value in the games/set market.

However, I ultimately expect for Karlović’s experience to push him into the quarterfinals.

Tip: Karlović to win: 8/11 (bet365)
