Siegemund Enjoyed Best Year of Her Career in 2020

Although she won the last of her two WTA titles back in 2017, Siegemund may well look back on 2020 as the best year of her career. She won her maiden Grand Slam title, partnering Vera Zvonareva to the US Open doubles, and, the following month, she reached her first ever Grand Slam singles quarter-final. She was eventually defeated by Petra Kvitova.

That was her last event of 2020, and the New Year did not start in the best of ways for her, as she was beaten in the first round in Abu Dhabi by the Belgian veteran Kirsten Flipkens.

She began the match well enough, taking the first set 7 – 5, but despite securing a break early in the second set, her game began to falter. Flipkens broke back and then broke once more to level the match, and then took the third set, securing victory with her second match point.

Diyas Looking for Form Ahead of Australian Open

Diyas won her only WTA title back in 2017 at the Japan Open, although her career has been blighted by injury.

Once ranked as high as 31 in the world, several years of indifferent form and performances have seen her drop down the order, with consistency a major problem for her. However, last year she did reach the third round of the Australian Open for the third time and is looking for some form ahead of this year’s tournament.

Beaten in the first round of the French Open by Ons Jabeur of Tunis, she made her first appearance of the year in Abu Dhabi, where she lost to Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia in the first round again.

It was a match of fine margins though, and one service break in each set was enough for Alexandrova to progress. Diyas fought hard and saved two match points, but, ultimately, it was not enough.

Siegemund v Diyas Prediction and Tip

Based on their world rankings and comparative form in 2020, Siegemund is the clear favourite to win this match, and should get the job done in straight sets..

Tip: Siegemund to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
