Caroline Garcia v Arina Rodionova Head to Head

Garcia won the pair’s only meeting before, at the Dubai Championships in 2015, winning 6-3 6-2.

Garcia Searching For Momentum

Caroline Garcia is the one player who struggles dearly without momentum. Historically, Garcia has fared dismally at these lead-up tournaments to the Australian Open to start the year. In contrast, the Frenchwoman has played with distinction in the lead-up to Roland Garros and in the final weeks of the WTA season over the last decade.

It is of course not rocket science to see why. She is a player who thrives with momentum on her side; playing and winning matches. The 2017 season is a perfect example, where she registered 48 match wins (the most in her career in a single season). 11 of those wins came across two weeks when she completed the Wuhan-Beijing double and earned a place in top 10 and qualified for the season-ending championships.

Her record at Melbourne park is mediocre to say the least. While many players would kill to have a record of reaching the second week of a Grand Slam at least once, Garcia -touted as a future number one by Andy Murray many years ago – should certainly do better.

She opens up in what is expected to be straightforward first round against Arina Rodionova.

Rodionova, One Of Four Australian Wildcards

Arina Rodionova is one of four wildcard from Australia at the Gippsland Trophy. It was perhaps a no brainer for the tournament organizers to hand her one as a Melbourne resident.

Rodionova has been on the professional tour for over 15 years, but she has not won a senior title in her career. She has, however, won nine singles titles on the ITF circuit and host of doubles titles on the same tour.

During the off season, she was frequented by fellow countrywoman Sam Stosur in her Melbourne residence for what she called ‘fun hits’ on the synthetic grass court in her house. The COVID-19 protocols have hit players hard especially for those without a practice partner and cannot move between cities in Australia.

For 31-year-old Rodionova, she will be hopeful her fitness is at game-level for the meeting of Garcia.

Garcia v Rodionova Prediction and Tip

Rodionova pulled off a major upset in Adelaide last season when she beat Sloane Stephens in the first round. But Stephens is known for throwing in the towel at times, which cannot be said for Garcia. The Frenchwoman should bulldoze her way in the second round unscathed.

Tip: Garcia to win in straight sets: 4/11 (bet365)
