Rafael Nadal v Alex De Minaur Head to Head
This will be the fourth meeting between the two players.
Rafael Nadal brings a perfect head-to-head record, having won all of their three previous meetings. He did so in 2018 in Wimbledon, in 2019 in the Australian Open, and most recently in the semi-final of last year’s ATP Cup.
They have played a total of nine sets against each other, eight of which have gone the Spaniard’s way.

Nadal Shines Against Thiem
Having last played in the 2020 ATP finals where Medvedev got the better of him in the semis, Nadal kicked off his 2021 campaign with a hard-fought win against Dominic Thiem in an exhibition match.
With isolation finally over, Nadal took to a packed stadium and delighted spectators with a straight-sets win against a player who’d recently gotten the better of him in both the ATP Finals and in last year’s Australian Open.
Despite it being an exhibition match, both players were still determined to bring their A-game. After the flurry of hard shots, fast-paced action, and 22 games, the match tilted Nadal’s way with a 7-5 6-4 scoreline.
Nadal later claimed that he’d been preparing hard for all the upcoming tournaments and vowed to deliver something special in Australia this year.
He narrowly lost to his old foe Novak Djokovic in last year’s ATP cup final, which ended up giving Serbia a 2-1 win over Spain. This time around, he’ll be hoping to go a step further and spearhead Spain’s charge to the title.

De Minaur Hoping To Continue Title-Winning Form
De Minaur was impressive in Turkey earlier on in January where he claimed his fourth ATP singles title. He conceded only one set in the entirety of the tournament and proved to be of great value in all his victories.
He might have had an easier path to the title in the final after Alexander Bublik was forced to retire after only seven minutes, but he’d already stamped some authority in the match at that point.
He also had a good 2020 that saw him achieve his best-ever grand slam result: a quarter-final berth at the US Open, where he only lost to eventual champion Thiem. Add to that a quarter-final berth in Sofia, in addition to reaching the Antwerp Open final, and it’s clear that the 21-year-old has been in some consistent form in the last few years.
Nadal may be the undisputed favorite in their upcoming matchup, but De Minaur has vastly improved from their last meeting. His speed and agility could prove to be a deciding factor against an aging Nadal.
Additionally, with the home crowd in his corner, an upset may just be within the realm of possibility.
Nadal v De Minaur Prediction and Tip
Nadal is priced at 2/7 to win this match. However, just like their last meeting a year ago, I’d expect De Minaur to offer some resistance and, at the very least, win a set against the Spaniard.
Tip: De Minaur to win a set: 1/1 (bet365)
