While she was an overwhelming favourite to win her opener, Martic started off her second round encounter against Vera Lapko like she was the challenger. Dropping her serve in the very first game of the opening set, Martic then fell two breaks of serve behind her opponent by the fifth game.
Three successive breaks of serves later, Martic held her serve only for Lapko to serve it out and win the opening set. Very soon, Lapko went 2-0 up in the second set too, with Martic’s rustiness coming to fore at this stage.
It was only after Martic broke back in the fourth game of the second set that things began to change course. Another break of serve followed soon after in favour of the Croat and very soon she had levelled the match.
The third set began with a bizarre exchange of serve breaks, but Martic took control to make it three breaks in a row while in turn holding her own serve. Not so later, she was serving for the match and made it through with ease to register a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win in her first match of the season.

Rogers in a Fight of Her Own
The world number 60 Rogers needed two hours and 22 minutes to make it past Rebecca Peterson in her second round match, with her Swede opponent holding nerve in the second set to make life difficult for the American.
Rogers went on to win 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in a match that saw just two breaks of serve in the first two sets. The American clinched the all-important break in the ninth game of the opening set that allowed her to serve for the first set before Peterson broke Rogers in the 12th game of the second to claim the equaliser.
The third set, however, lacked the intensity of the first two once Rogers got an early break of serve and she doubled that advantage by winning another one in the fifth. Soon after, she it out to love to clinch a place in the third round.
Rogers is coming off a strong previous season which saw her get to the quarterfinals at the US Open following a semifinal appearance at the Lexington Open, with wins over Serena Williams, Leylah Fernandez, Petra Kvitova and Elena Rybakina in the process.
