Fabio Fognini v Benoit Paire Head to Head
Fognini and Paire have played each five times before, and it is flamboyant Frenchman who leads in this rivalry 3-2, winning their last encounter at the Australian Open in 2017.
Outside one of their meetings in Belgrade, their matches have been contested at biggest event (Grand Slam/Olympic games), and this one follows suit.

Fognini Loses Singles, But Redeems Himself In Doubles
It was a tale of two contrasting halves for Team Italy as they got their ATP Cup campaign underway against Austria at the John Cain Arena.
First off, Fabio Fognini suffered a shock defeat to Denis Novak in the first match of this second edition, and suprisingly in straight sets.
It was an underwhelming performance by the unpredictable Italian, one which lacked zeal and aggression. Fognini fashioned just one break point on Novak’s serve in the whole match and won a mere 18 receiving points in total.
In contrast, his opponent Denis Novak, the world no.100 had been waiting for this moment since early December when he began his off-season training. He completed the win in 72 minutes.
Fognini earned the chance to redeem himself in doubles after compatriot Berrettini defeated Dominic Thiem to restore parity. The pair won 6-1 6-4 to give Italy a 1-0 lead in Group C.

France Look To Do Better Than Last Year’s Third Place Finish
With a team boasting the athleticism of Gael Monfils and the flamboyance of Benoit Paire, France will look to do better than last year’s disappointing third place finish.
Paire and Monfils took part at last year’s edition and put the French in the ascendancy with victory over Chile.
A deafeat to Serbia was perhaps expected, despite the admirable effort of Paire to beat Dusan Lajovic in one of the singles rubbers.
However, there exit was confirmed after losing to South Africa in quite dramatic circumstances. Now the men in blue will have a clean slate on Wednesday as Paire confronts Fognini.
Paire, a former world no.18, has underlined the importance of the ATP Cup, stretching his view that the team competition is more important to him than the forthcoming first Grand Slam of the year. A big statememt indeed, and Paire will hope to follow it up with a big performamce.
Fognini v Paire Prediction and Tip
Fognini cannot afford another slow start and expect Berrettini to bail him out. Matches against Paire have not been straightforward and this one is likely to follow suit.
Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
