Felix Auger-Aliassime v Yuichi Sugita Head to Head

This is the first ever meeting between Auger-Aliassime and Sugita at a competitive level.

Auger-Aliassime Still Hunting for Maiden ATP Title

That Auger-Aliassime is a super-talented lad has no doubts whatsoever but six ATP final appearances later he is yet to win a title and that is a stat that might rankle.

Well, there are always two sides to a story, so the positive to take away from that is the Canadian has made it to those many finals, in a space of less than two years – which also includes a period of five months when there was no tennis because of the pandemic.

The other side is longer this void remains, tougher it could get for him mentally despite knowing he has age in his favour.

Three of these six finals came last season, including two before the pandemic break and more recently at the Cologne Open competition where he went down to Alexander Zverev in the title-decider. He followed that up with a semifinal in the second tournament held in the same city but ended the season with a four-match losing streak that saw him bow out of the Vienna Open, Paris Masters and Sofia Open in the first round.

Can he kick-start the new year with an easy win?

Sugita Wins a Fight-to-Finish Contest

No inches were given in Sugita’s first round match against Frenchman Quentin Halys and the Japanese player needed three sets and two hours and 13 minutes to complete a hard-fought victory.

Sugita was always behind the eight-ball in the first set once he had dropped his serve in the very first game of the match, and while he retaliated soon after with a break of his own, Halys broke back twice more to pouch the set.

The second set saw the two players exchange breaks of serve in the seventh and eighth game but other than that it was headed only one way – a tie-breaker – and Sugita levelled thing off with a 7-3 win there.

As the contest became cagier, neither player dropped serve in the final till very late; serving to stay in the match at 5-6, Sugita upped his game and got himself three break-points, also match-points, and needed just one of them to complete the victory.

Auger-Aliassime v Sugita Prediction and Tip

We are looking at an Auger-Aliassime win here but not before he is forced to shrug off his rustiness. Can Sugita trouble the Canadian though?

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
