Alexandrova Routs Halep
World No. 33 Ekaterina Alexandrova overpowered World No. 2 Simona Halep in the quarterfinal of the Gippsland Trophy on Friday.
In what turned out to be a complete demolition, the Russian needed just an hour to oust the Romanian 6-2, 6-1.
Alexandrova, who got off to a slow start, falling 0-2 behind in the first set, got into a good rhythm as the match progressed and struck 18 winners against Halep’s six to improve 2-1 head to head against the top seed. She also created 10 break point opportunities, converting five of them, while Halep could capitalize on only one of the six break point chances she created for herself.
The 26-year-old Russian, who won her maiden WTA title in Shenzhen last year, has struck good form in Melbourne. Having got a first-round bye, Alexandrova was tested by Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the second round, but fought her way back into the contest to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. In the Round-of-16, Alexandrova needed just an hour and 19 minutes to defeat last year’s French Open champion and sixth-seed Iga Swiatek of Poland 6-4, 6-2.
Alexandrova, who reached a career-high ranking of 25 last year, had begun her 2021 campaign in Abu Dhabi, where she fell to Elina Svitolina in a closely contested Round-of-16 match.
She also reached the semifinals in St. Petersburg and Linz last year.

Kanepi Advances After Muchova Withdraws
World No. 94 Kaia Kanepi advanced to the semifinal without even taking the court on Friday after eighth seed Karolina Muchova withdrew with a left abdominal injury.
A six-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist and a former World No. 15, Kanepi started the tournament with a come-from-behind first-round win over Australia’s Astra Sharma. She won the two hour and 10 minute contest 1-6, 7-5, 6-2. In the second round, the 35-year-old Estonian ended fourth seed Aryna Sabalenka’s 15-match win streak, defeating the Belarusian 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 in an hour and 44 minutes.
A winner of four WTA titles, Kanepi had a relatively easy Round-of-16 match, as she needed just 79 minutes to dispatch Russia’s Daria Kasatkina 7-5, 6-1.
Alexandrova v Kanepi Prediction and Tip
It should be a good match between two in-form players who have both caused big upsets in the tournament. But the manner in which Alexandrova beat Halep makes her a heavy favourite to go through.
Tip: Alexandrova to win: 8/11 (bet365)
