de Minaur Begins with Title But…
It has been that kind of a start for de Minaur, the kind you expect when playing in the backdrop of a pandemic, a quarantine and a crunched schedule.
He travelled to Turkey where the Aussie went the distance at the Antalya Open. Defeating Nikoloz Basilashvili, David Goffin and Alexander Bublik, the 23rd-ranked de Minaur went on to win his fourth ATP title to kick-start his season.
However, back home, and the Aussie failed to get going against arguably two of the toughest opponents around. In the first match of the ATP Cup, de Minaur blew away a set lead to go down to Roberto Bautista Agut.
And he followed it up with a straight-set defeat at the hands of Stefanos Tsitsipas while playing against Greece, denting some of the confidence he would have earned from the Antalya victory. Question now is whether he can take the form from Turkey into the Australian Open, pretending the ATP Cup never happened and go deep into the competition?
He did make it to the quarterfinal of the US Open last season, his best Grand Slam performance by some distance.

Can Sandgren Repeat His 2020 Exploits Here?
It was the third tournament of the season for Sandgren in 2020. He had had an ordinary start to the year after losing in the first round in Doha and the second round in Auckland.
A first round win at the Australian Open was on expected lines but that was followed by a run of victories that came totally against the run of play.
Matteo Berrettini was edged out in a five-setter, the Sam Querrey win needed just three sets, and then when he stunned Fabio Fognini in the fourth round, the world had begun to take notice of sudden change in fortunes for the then 28-year-old Sandgren.
It was also expected that would be the end of his journey as he took on Roger Federer in the quarterfinal. Up two sets to one against Federer was a shock in itself but the fact he was two points away from winning the match before Federer came back to win it in five capped a thrilling end to what had been a stunning run from Sandgren.
The rest of the season went off like he would have otherwise expected – the rare win or two in tournaments, while crashing out early in the rest. He has now begun the season with a second round exit at the Great Ocean Road Open, again on the lines of what’s a par performance from Sandgren who has one ATP title to his name.
Can he get anywhere near his showing from the previous season here at Melbourne Park? De Minaur could have other ideas.
de Minaur v Sandgren Prediction and Tip
It’s no surprise that de Minaur is a heavy favourite but at 1/12 the odds look rather short. We expect de Minaur to win but for Sandgren to grab at least a set.
Tip: De Minaur to win AND Both players to win a set: 7/4 (bet365)
