Ons Jabeur v Andrea Petkovic Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between these two players and both have won one apiece. The first came at the US Open of 2014 which Petkovic won in three sets, before Jabeur had her revenge in the Cincinnati Open 2019 qualifiers.

Jabeur Growing into the Season

2020 was turning out to be a breakout season for Jabeur before the pandemic struck and called for all sports to pause. A qualifier at the Hobart International in the lead-up to last year’s Australian Open, she then shocked Johanna Konta, Caroline Garcia, Carolina Wozniacki and Wang Qiang in the year’s first major to get to his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Four wins at the Fed Cup and a quarterfinal appearance in Dubai followed soon after, before the season went on a hiatus.

On return, Jabeur showed she had not lost any of that form, making the quarterfinal of the Cincinnati Open and then a fourth round at the French Open. The world number 30 has warmed up nicely for this season too with a third round appearance at the Abu Dhabi Open and an opening win in Melbourne.

Defeats to Aryna Sabalenka and Angelique Kerber would have obviously hurt but these are early days as she looks to grow back into the 2021 season.

Veteran Petkovic Starts with Surprise Win

While Petkovic eventually lost in the second round of the Gippsland Trophy, she would have been pleased with first round victory over Martina Trevisan. And that’s because that victory came close on the heels of a season in which Petkovic played a few exhibition matches and just one top-level competitive match.

That came at the French Open where she fell to a fellow veteran, who herself hadn’t played too much tennis all year – Tsvetana Pironkova.

Petkovic, whose last WTA title came in 2015, had a solid 2019 season before failing to return back till very late the following year because of a knee procedure. If she can show the kind of form from that season, which had her make the third round at the French Open (where she beat Alison Riske )and then against at the US Open (where she upset Petra Kvitova), her opponent could be in for a surprise.

Question is if she would be able to recreate that kind of magic again.

Jabeur v Petkovic Prediction and Tip

While Jabeur is the obvious favourite, starting out at 2/7 to win this, Petkovic would prove to be a competitive opponent and might even win a set.

Tip: Petkovic to win a set: 1/1 (bet365)
