Nick Kyrgios enters the Australian Open having achieved mixed results on return to action after a gap of almost a year.
Kicking off the season with a come-from-behind three-set win over France’s Alexander Muller in the Murray River Open this week, Australia’s Nick Kyrgios got his second win of the tournament, when he defeated Harry Bourchier in the next round.
The former World No. 13, who had little trouble in dispatching the lower-ranked Aussie in the Round of 32, struggled against Borna Coric in the Round of 16, eventually going down to the Croatian in straight sets.
Kyrgios complained of pain on his left knee as he failed to get into a rhythm against the fourth seed Coric, who made the last eight but eventually fell to Briton Dan Evans.
Known for his short temper, Kyrgios has had quite a few flare-ups this week. Against Bourchier, he was seen arguing with the umpire for being called out for a foot fault and even briefly left the court before returning to close the contest.
Against Coric, things got worse, as he used inappropriate language, smashed a racquet and even threw it in the empty stands. He got multiple warnings during the match and was even handed a point penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The 25-year-old, who is a six-time champion and three-time finalist on the Tour, reached the fourth round of the Australian Open last year, before going down to Rafael Nadal.
His best performance at the Melbourne slam came in 2015 when he reached his second major quarterfinal, a year after reaching the same stage at Wimbledon. Since then, Kyrgios has struggled to make it that deep in the majors.
When he takes the court on Monday, it will be interesting to see if he shows any signs of the pain he felt against Coric and also if he is able to keep his anger in check as he begins his eighth Australian Open campaign.

Silva Makes the Main Draw at a Major For the First Time
Facing Kyrgios on Monday will be a little-known Portuguese, Frederico Ferreira Silva, who qualified for his maiden main draw at the majors after winning all three of his qualifying rounds in Doha.
The World No. 184 defeated Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko in straight sets, before having to bounce back from a set down to beat Serbia’s Nikola Milojevic in the next match.
In the final qualifying round, Silva defeated France’s Gregoire Barrere in straight sets to book his ticket to Melbourne.
The Portuguese left-hander, who has a 5-7 career record at the senior level, played at the Murray River Open earlier this week, falling to Czech Republic’s Jiri Vessely in straight sets.
Kyrgios v Ferreira Silva Prediction and Tip
If Kyrgios is pain-free and in the right mood it should result a three-set win for the Aussie. That combination, however, is a tough one and we might see bit of a struggle for the Aussie.
