The 20-year-old Canadian returned to the tour after staying away from any sort of tennis action for the entirety of last year. While her other adversaries on the tour were competing in the Grand Slams and other tournaments, wherever they could find, Andreescu decided to refrain from it all.
Before arriving in Melbourne for the Australian Open, her last tournaments were in 2019, notably the China Open and WTA Shenzhen Finals. However, the US Open and Rogers Cup champion for that season failed to put up an equally good performance in these Asian events.
Despite this, she finds herself to be a solid part of the top 10, currently ranked World No. 9.
Andreescu did not participate in any of the tuneup events either. Her first sanctioned match on the tour came right here in Melbourne on day one of Australian Open. Facing the Romanian veteran Mihaela Buzarnescu, the youngster moved past with 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, in two hours.
It was a sloppy performance, admittedly so given the lack of practice. The number 8 seed committed 34 unforced errors and converted just 3 out of 9 break points. If it were any other formidable opponent, things would have been precarious for her.

Hsieh, Hoping for Some Doubles Inspiration
Su-Wei Hsieh is currently World No. 1 on the doubles circuit and will be hoping to bring some of that magic in her singles encounter too.
Partnered with Barbora Strycova, she was the runner-up in the Australian Open Women’s Doubles and later in the season, the pair moved on to win the Qatar Open and Italian Open.
As a singles player, however, Hsieh hasn’t achieved a great deal at all. With her last title dating back to 2018, it is fair to say that she has faded from that scene.
The 35-year-old recently played in the Yarra Valley Classic and WTA Abu Dhabi but fell in the opening rounds to Marta Kostyuk and Alison Van Uytvanck. This was pretty much in line with her majority of the 2020 singles season.
As for her winning start in the Melbourne Slam, she faced the Bulgarian qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova and won 7-5, 6-2.
Andreescu vs Hsieh Prediction and Tip
There is a massive difference when we look at the age gap between the two players. However, what Andreescu lacks in wisdom and experience, she makes up for it with some scintillating, inspiring tennis. Expect the Canadian to win this with some resistance.
