Markéta Vondroušová v Rebecca Marino Head to Head

While these two players haven’t faced off on the WTA tour before this, they did play in a Fed Cup match of 2019. Vondrousova had won that one in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

Vondroušová Overturns Opening Deficit

In a match lasting two hours and 24 minutes, Vondrousova managed to squeak past Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson in her opening round encounter. She overturned the loss of the first set to put up a fighting display, clinching her place in the second round 2-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Vondrousova looked ragged in the first set, her run to the semifinal at the Melbourne tune-up quite forgotten, and it looked like she was on her way to falling to a straight-set defeat when she trailed Peterson 3-1 in the second.

A break in the very next game helped her level the set and when the Czech broke yet again, she was serving for the set. Peterson broke back only to lose her serve off the very next game to go down in the set.

A chuffed Vondrousova then went up 2-0 in the final set, staved off a Peterson comeback on two separate occasions including once while serving for the match before breaking the Swede yet again to finish off the encounter.

Marino Blasts Past Birrell

This was an interesting match-up. On the one side was the 317th-ranked Marino who had once been a top-40 player and on the other was 22-year-old Kimberly Birrell, a 739th-ranked Australian having made it through as a wild-card.

And it was the 300-odd-th ranked player who came through in this contest, winning it in straight sets 6-0, 7-6.

Marino had earlier won three qualifying rounds to make it to the main draw but lost to Jasmine Paolini in the first round of the Gippsland Trophy earlier last week. Having missed all of last season, she has now won her first Grand Slam main draw match since 2013 but up against the former French Open champion makes one believe it wouldn’t be getting any easier for her from here on.

Vondroušová v Marino Prediction and Tip

Vondrousova is 2/7 to win this, which to me are good odds given the disparity in the player profiles. A straight-set win also looks likely.

Tip: Vondrousova to win in straight sets: 8/11 (bet365)
