Petra Kvitová v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head
This has been an old rivalry which has already seen seven matches played between 2008 and 2016, making this the first in five years. Kvitova leads 5-2, but here’s what’s more interesting – both her losses have come on hard court surfaces, the only two matches played on that surface too.

Kvitová Outguns Greet
Having been stunned in the third round of the Yarra Valley Classic last week, Kvitova began her Australian Open campaign with a straight-set win over Greet Minnen.
There were a few hiccups in the second set of that encounter but the experience and class of the 2019 runnerup stood out as she clinched the hour and 23 minute long encounter 6-3, 6-4 to proceed to round two.
The first set was plain rolling for the Czech, breaking Minnen in the fourth and the sixth game. While she herself dropped her serve in the seventh game, the buffer of the extra break helped her sail through in the set.
Minnen stormed back in the second with a break of serve in Kvitova’s very first service game and with a 4-1 lead under her belt, looked like she could force a decider. Instead Kvitova ran through the next five games, which included two breaks of erve and completed the victory.

Cirstea Trots Past Tig
She did start off as a favourite against Patricia Maria Tig in her first round match but Cirstea would still be pleased with her 6-2, 6-1 win over the 56th-ranked Romanian. And Tig’s ranking is her career-best, which will please Cirstea even more given is a few places behind her on the WTA charts.
Cirstea did have some sort of rhythm coming into this tournament, having made it past Belinda Bencic in the second round of the Grampians Trophy.
Last season, Cirstea struggled at the highest level, a third round appearance at the US Open being her only tournament in which she won a couple of main draw rounds. However, she did win the title at the Dubai ITF competition towards the fag end of the season which would have given her some confidence coming into this Australian Open swing.
That said, Kvitova is the kind of opponent who can drain her of that confidence.
Kvitová v Cirstea Prediction and Tip
Kvitova is a firm favourite in this one at 1/4 but Cirstea’s recent rhythm and the fact that she has done well on these surfaces in the past against the Czech, we could have a less one-sided encounter than those odds suggest.
