Stan Wawrinka v Marton Fucsovics Head to Head

There have been four previous matches between Wawrinka and Fucsovics. The Swiss has won three of them while Fucsovics had defeated Wawrinka on clay way back in 2018 in what was their first meeting. The next three matches were on hard court surfaces in Toronto, Cincinnati and Indian Wells.

Wawrinka Punishes Pedro in Opener

The Swiss number two wasted no time in getting past Pedro Sousa in his opening round of the competition, beating his opponent 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Wawrinka took advantage of the quicker courts, hitting seven aces and 35 winners to his 26 unforced errors, even as he won 10 of his 14 points at the net. However, most vitally, Wawrinka did not face a single break-point in the entire match, while himself getting the better of his opponent’s serve on four separate occasions.

Earlier in the season, Wawrinka had needed two three-setters in each of his first two rounds at the Murray River Open, but finally withdrew from his quarterfinal against Jeremy Chardy in a bid to prepare for the year’s first major. And by the looks of things he has done a good job of it.

He will now take on an opponent the world number 55 who has made it as far as the fourth round once before at this tournament.

Fucsovics Stretched to Five Sets

Having earlier beaten Marco Cecchinato in the first round of the Murray River Open, Fucsovics had then gone down in a tough three-setter to Egor Gerasimov in the second. However, his toughest match came in the opening round here in Melbourne Park when he took on local lad Marc Polmans.

It turned out to be a five-setter in which Fucsovics came back from a set down to take a 2-1 lead, but then lost the fourth set tie-breaker 7-3 for the scores to be levelled.

The final set didn’t start out as Fucsovics would have liked, as he lost serve first up but slowly grew back into it by breaking back in the fourth game and then repeating the dose in the eighth game to seal the deal.

Wawrinka v Fucsovics Prediction and Tip

While it might not be the most straight-forward of wins given Fucsovics’ fighting capabilities, Wawrinka should still be able to get past his Hungarian opponent. May be in four sets.

Tip: Wawrinka to win: 4/9 (bet365)
