Dominic Thiem v Dominik Koepfer Head to Head

Scratchy Start To Opener, But 2020 Finalist Hitting Good Form

The shortened 2020 season was a positive one for Dominic Thiem who won his first Grand Slam at the US Open, was a finalist at the Australian Open and the ATP Tour Finals in London, as well as ended the year on all time career high ranking of number three in the world.

Thiem came into 2021 with the monkey off his back as far as winning his first ever major, but now with the expectations of being one who is going to add to his title count and an actual equal with the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

It was not the best of starts for the Austrian who looked woefully out of touch in his ATP Cup opener against Matteo Berrettini and the rusty run seemed to continue into his opener against Mikhail Kukushkin in the first round here. Saving set points in the first set, Thiem was able to clinch it in the tiebreak, but then looked to be back to his routine self gradually with convincing play in the next two sets.

The Austrian will hope for routine wins over the first week here on as the task gets uphill later on in the draw.

Gritty Koepfer Looking To Unsettle Thiem

26-year old Dominik Koepfer has been on the tour for the last four seasons and evolved from being an ATP Challenger Tour participant. With a good all-round game and belief in himself, he has sprung some good results.

Koepfer made the fourth round of the 2019 US Open where he pushed Daniil Medvedev as well as make the quarter-finals of the 2020 Italian Open Masters 1000. 2021 was not off to the best of starts for the German with a tame loss at the Melbourne ATP 250 opener.

Koepfer looked in good form in his first round match against Hugo Dellien with a 7-5, 6-2,6-4 win displaying both a good repertoire of shots as well as instilled confidence in himself. The next step as he will know only too well will be increasingly more challenging.

Thiem v Koepfer Prediction and Tip

While German Koepfer may not have met with plenty of success in recent terms, he is a gritty customer who can bring a stern challenge. Thiem may have looked rusty early in his opener, but he did well to recover and get back to his clinical self.

Koepfer will test Thiem, but expect a straight sets win for the Austrian.

Tip: Thiem to win in three sets: 4/11 (bet365)
