Denis Shapovalov v Bernard Tomic Head to Head

It was already tipped to be one of the matches to watch out in the first round and the Shapovalov-Jannik Sinner encounter lived every bit to its top billing.
Sinner was coming into the tournament on the back of a title in Melbourne just the previous week, the second of his career, but that also meant he struggled with his fitness in this encounter. Shapovalov took a 2-1 lead and then broke Sinner in the fourth to go 3-1 up, only for the Italian to break back twice and level things off at two sets apiece.
The Canadian did look like he was in strife when he got involved in an argument with umpire and with his shoulder also hurting, Sinner looked like a favourite going into the final set.
However, Shapovalov channelised the anger towards breaking Sinner in the very first game of the set and then held serve throughout to stave off his opponent in a match that lasted nearly four hours.
This follows a poor start to the season for Shapovalov, who had lost both his singles matches at the ATP Cup, but those had come against arguably two of the best in the business, Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic.

Tomic Aiming to Return to Where He Belongs
He was once ranked 17th in the world but off-court issues have seen Tomic tumble to 233rd in the world, his current ranking. So much so, Tomic hasn’t won a round at a Grand Slam since the Wimbledon of 2018 where he reached the second round.
Last year, Tomic’s only main draw match win came in a Challenger at Monterrey, which meant when he featured at the Australian Open qualifiers earlier this season, not too many would have bet on the Aussie making the main draw.
As it turned out, not only did Tomic win all his qualifiers, he then led Yuichi Sugita in the first round 4-1 in the third set, before the match had to be called off because of his opponent’s injury.
Tomic now has a task on his hands obviously but having won four matches out of four this season, the Aussie will come into this encounter with confidence.
Shapovalov v Tomic Prediction and Tip
While Shapovalov, at 1/10 is odds on favourite to win this, Tomic could serve up some trouble for the Canadian. Looking at the games handicap for this one.
