Coric Rolls Past Pella

Croatia’s Borna Coric served 23 aces as he defeated Argentina’s Guido Pella 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 in the first round of the Australian Open on Tuesday.

The 22nd seed, who reached the quarterfinal of the Murray River Open last week, hit 52 winners to wrap up the contest in two hours and 23 minutes.

Coric also won 16 of 23 net points and converted 4 of 11 break point chances against Pella, who himself had three opportunities to break and converted two of them.

A two-time ATP champion, Coric is coming off a decent 2020, when he finished runner-up at St. Petersburg for the second consecutive year. He also achieved his best Grand Slam result last year, reaching the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open before falling to Alexander Zverev. The Croatian, who reached a career-high ranking of 12 in 2018, also featured in the semifinals in Rio.

In the tune-up to the Australian Open last week, Coric beat Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori and Nick Kyrgios to reach the last eight before falling to Briton Dan Evans.

McDonald Starts Slowly Before Dominating Cecchinato

Facing Coric on Thursday will be 25-year-old American Mackenzie McDonald, who bounced back from a set down to beat Italy’s Marco Cecchinato in the first round on Tuesday.

The Italian, ranked 110 places above the American, got off to a good start claiming the first set with two breaks of serve against McDonald’s one. But he couldn’t get another break in the match as the American rebounded to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in two hours and 12 minutes.

A former No. 57, McDonald struck 14 aces and 44 winners while committing just 24 unforced errors. He also approached the net 26 times winning 15 of those points.

As the match progressed, McDonald got in good rhythm and put up a dominating display, converting six of 11 break points in the entire contest.

The American, who is trying to climb back the rankings after a recent surgery saw him slide down, had come into the tournament with a 1-2 record this year. He lost the opener at Delray Beach and finished 1-1 at the Murray River Open last week, beating Richard Gasquet in the first round and going down fighting to Alex Bolt in the next.

Coric v McDonald Prediction and Tip

McDonald has got into a good rhythm and he will test Coric, but the Croatian should advance after a closely contested match.

Tip: Coric to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/4 (bet365)
