Norrie Stuns Fellow Brit

Norrie hadn’t made too bad a start to the season as he carved his way through to the semifinal of the Delray Beach Open in January, but this was followed by his opening round exit at the Murray River Open in Melbourne.

To be fair to him, Tommy Paul is a strong opponent and one to watch for the future, and a fighting three-set defeat would have left him with some confidence.

Which is why when he played the in-form Dan Evans, Norrie managed to stave off what looked like a certain defeat according to the bookmakers. Norrie had started at 2/1 to surprise his opponent who was coming off his maiden ATP title last week.

And he achieved that result, beating Evans 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to proceed to round two.

Norrie’s 2020 was filled with a lot of early exits, although he did make it to the third round at the US Open but interestingly enough it was punctuated with his appearances at the Battle of the Brits where he performed a lot better than most of his peers.

He now has a chance to make it to the third round of a Grand Slam for just the second time in his career.

Safiullin Erases Ivashka from Round One

The 110th-ranked Ilya Ivashka was a favourite going into his opening round match against Safiullin but all he got was a straight-set rout.

Safiullin needed just two hours and eight minutes to get past his opponent in a match in which he was rarely tested. Because never in the three sets did the Russian fall behind while serving, only losing his serve after he had already broken his opponent, if at all.

The world number 183 slammed 12 aces and 30 winners in his 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 triumph, also winning a solid 77% of his first serve points in the process. He had earlier qualified for the Australian Open with three back to back wins, while also falling in the first round of the Great Ocean Road Open last week.

A former junior Australian Open winner, this is already his best Grand Slam performance and he would be hoping to stop Norrie from a third round place.

Norrie v Safiullin Prediction and Tip

Norrie is 1/3 to win but Safiullin can be expected to give it a good shot. Liking the games market for this one.

Tip: Over 36.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
