Shelby Rogers v Olga Danilovic Head to Head

Their only previous encounter came at the 2019 Houston Open, and Danilovic had won that first round match on a hard court surface in straight sets.

After having had a reasonably solid 2020, with a quarterfinals at the US Open as her crowning glory for the year, Rogers swiftly moved into the new season with another excellent showing in the Melbourne tuneup tournament.

The 2020 Lexington Open semifinalist defeated Fiona Ferro, Rebecca Peterson and Petra Martic to enter the quarterfinals at the Yarra Valley Classic before it took the world number one and the eventual winner to overcome her.

And taking that same form further into the Australian Open, Rogers blew away Britain’s Francesca Jones in her first round match, defeating the 20-year-old 6-4, 6-1 to enter round two. This was only second main draw win at the Australian Open in what has been her seventh appearance.

Rogers now has a chance to make it to the third round for the first time at Melbourne Park for the season-opening Grand Slam.

Danilovic Dumps Seeded Martic

Having gone into her first round match at odds of nearly 2/1, Danilovic, whose highest ever ranking is 96th in the world, came through in three sets against Petra Martic. She won 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 to make it to her first ever second round at a Grand Slam.

In fact, Danilovic had started off as a main draw debutant, having come through via the qualifiers, but not too many had expected the Serb to surprise the world number 19 from Croatia. And when she was broken early in the first set, it did seem like Martic wouldn’t be having too many issues.

Danilovic fought back by first breaking her opponent in the sixth game and then again in 12th to claim the set. Martic retaliated by going up a couple of breaks and then winning the set by breaking for the third time before racing away to a 3-1 lead in the final set.

It was here that the Serb showed her grittiness, as both players lost their serves in four of the next five games, including three in favour of Danilovic. Serving for the match at 5-4, Danilovic looked least bothered as she racked up three match-points and converted the first to enter the second round.

Rogers v Danilovic Prediction and Tip

Form and class point to a Rogers win and while her Serb opponent could mount a fight the American can be expected to clinch this in straight sets.

Tip: Rogers to win in straight sets: 4/5 (bet365)
