Kaja Juvan v Mayar Sherif Head to Head

This will be the first time that the 104th-ranked Juvan faces the 131st-ranked Sherif in a competitive match on any circuit.

Juvan Benefits from Konta Injury

It felt like a jab in her stomach but that was enough for Johanna Konta to retire from her opening round match against Juvan giving the Slovenian her first ever main draw victory at the Australian Open. It would also be Juvan’s fourth appearance in the second round at a Grand Slam when she takes to court on Thursday.

Juvan looked like she was in early strife against her British opponent when she fell behind a break and while she retaliated with a break back in the very next game, the struggles continued as she lost serve yet again. The world number 104 then saved a couple of set-points on her own serve down 3-5, missed a break-point before conceding the opening set to Konta.

It was while Konta was serving for the first time in the second set that she felt something in her stomach and with serving becoming difficult, she conceded the tie immediately after taking a medical timeout.

Juvan had earlier qualified for the Australian Open by winning all her matches in straight sets and then made it to the second round at the tuneup tournament in Melbourne where she fell fighting to Iga Swiatek.

She now has a chance for her maiden third round berth at a major.

Sherif Wins Maiden Grand Slam Match

The Egyptian qualifier started playing tennis at the Grand Slam level only last year, in which she was dumped out of the qualifiers at the Australian Open, and lost in the first round of the French Open.

In only her third Grand Slam appearance, therefore, Sherif has won a match, making it a proud moment for her. As luck would have it, Sherif was pitted against a fellow qualifier Chloe Pacquet, and came through in straight sets 7-5, 7-5.

This follows a horrible end to the previous season where Sherif played seven matches across the ITF and WTA circuit and lost every single one of them after the pandemic break. Can she now surprise a second qualifier?

Juvan v Sherif Prediction and Tip

Juvan is a highly-talented youngster who has been tipped to go the distance at some point in her career, and she would be fancying her chances here. A fighting win for the Slovenian.

Tip: Two sets in the match: 4/9 (bet365)
