Serena Williams v Anastasia Potapova Head to Head

There has been one previous match between these two players before this and it came in the first round of the Australian Open previous season. Serena had won that one 6-3, 6-0 and given her current form she would be looking confident to do the same.

Serena Wasting No Time So Far

It’s not as if the opposition Serena has faced so far has been anything to write home about but the American has been clinical in her disposal of them. If Laura Siegemund didn’t prove to be too much of an opposition in either of the two sets, losing 6-1, 6-1 in their first round match, Serbia’s Nina Stojanovic tried to put something of an effort in their opening set.

Serena broke in the fourth game of the opening set, needing four break-points to get past her opponent and while Stojanovic had a couple of break-points of her own in the seventh game, the American fought back to clinch the game. And within a couple of games, the set was hers too.

Once the early nerves were put to bed, there was no looking back for Serena, who raced through the second set, converting three of the five break-points she got. With six aces, 27 winners and just 11 unforced errors for Serena, the match was headed only one way and she would like to continue recording similar numbers as she goes deeper into the tournament.

Potapova Clinical in First Two Rounds

While 19-year-old Potapova is currently outside the top 100 on the WTA Rankings, she has shown enough improvement in recent times to suggest her place is closer to her career-best ranking of 64th in the world.

Whether that would be enough to test someone like Serena remains to be seen but Potapova has been clinical in her victories in her own right. Whether it was against Whitney Osuigwe in the first round of the Melbourne tune-up or in the two matches she has won at the Australian Open.

In the first round, Potapova sent out Alison Riske in a mere 53 minutes, winning 6-2, 6-1 and then came back on Wednesday to crush Timea Babos 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 18 minutes. And now while she takes on a champion player, Potapova might, just might give herself a chance to wait for an outside hope Serena has a bad day for her to capitalise on.

Serena v Potapova Prediction and Tip

Bookmakers are favouring an easy Serena win and frankly that’s what you can expect out of this too. However, Potapova will make the run, and expect her to make Serena run too, whether that would be enough to pull off a set remains to be seen.

Tip: Over 18.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
