Sara Errani v Su-Wei Hsieh Head to Head
The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 26-year-old American, and the Russian.
Errani Rolling Back the Years
The Italian was a beaten finalist in the French Open, and has twice been a winner of the doubles here in Melbourne, with her partner Roberta Vinci, along with three other Grand Slam titles. However, the last of those triumphs was some years ago, and she has not previously reached the third round of any Grand Slam event since 2015.
And she has been made to do it the hard way, needing to win three qualifying matches in the Middle East just to get to Australia.
She was given a tough opening draw too, against Qiang Wang of China, ranked 34 in the world, and initially struggled, drop pong the opening set for the gain of just two games, before she hit back to claim the next two.
That earned her a second round encounter with the veteran Venus Williams.
This time the Italian dominated the American, breaking the American three times as she romped through the first set. An injury to Venus, who twisted her ankle made it nearly impossible for her to continue but she opted to soldier on, leading to a one-sided second set as Errani won it to love, needing just a little over an hour to complete the match.

Hsieh Conquers Andreescu
Any thoughts that Hsieh would simply be using the singles event here as a warm-up for the doubles, where she is the world number one ranked player, have been swiftly dispelled by her performances. Two matches played and won, and she has yet to drop a set.
In the first round she played Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria, and, after she won the first set on a tie-break, two breaks of serve in the second set saw her close out the match.
The saw her play in the second round Bianca Andreescu, the number 8 seed and winner of the US Open in 2019, back competing again after missing the entire 2020 season with injury.
Hsieh seized control from the start, breaking Andreescu’s first two service games. She gave one of them back, but broke the Canadian once more to take the set.
Again, she broke Andreescu early in the second set and, although the Canadian fought back to level, Hsieh broke her one more, and then yet again, sealing the win with her second match point.
Errani v Hsieh Prediction and Tip
Although both women have played well to this point, based on their previous encounters, Errani has the measure of her opponent from Taiwan. She is favourite to continue her run in Melbourne.
Tip: Errani to win in straight sets: 11/10 (bet365)
