Marketa Vondrousova vs Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

The two ladies have never met before on the WTA Tour.

Cirstea Comes in with a Big Upset

Sorana Cirstea, currently ranked World No. 68, has won just one singles title over the course of her 16+ years as a professional player. With her last WTA final dating back to the Tashkent Open in 2019, the Romanian hasn’t really managed to build herself well on the tour.

So imagine the surprise when she defeated the number 9 seed Petra Kvitova in the second round of Australian Open here on Wednesday. Starting as the underdog and against overwhelming odds, Cirstea rose through the occasion like a champion the beat the Czech 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 to reach the third round in Melbourne.

That win was undoubtedly among Cirstea’s better performances of the career and certainly in line her with start to the 2021 season. She participated in the Grampians Trophy last week where she reached the quarterfinal after knocking out the Swiss No. 1 Belinda Bencic.

Additionally, after a horrid spell for most of 2020, the Romanian also won the ITF $100,000 event in Dubai, all the way as a qualifier.

The 30-year-old has had a long career and has seen her share of wins over the top 10 players like Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, Angelique Kerber, Kiki Bertens, and more.

Vondrousova Building on a Good Start

The 21-year-old Czech, who was once World No. 14, is seeking to get back to her glory days when she managed to reach the final of the French Open in 2019.

Despite settling for the runners-up trophy back in Paris, Vondrousova continued to work hard to keep herself afloat in the top 20. The youngster didn’t have that great of a season last year, understandably so owing to the plague.

After battling with series of early losses, the only consolation came to her in the Italian Open, where she was a semifinalist after beating Elina Svitolina. That terrific run, however, was followed by back to back first-round exits in the French Open and WTA Abu Dhabi.

That said, Marketa found her groove once again in the Yarra Valley Classic last week, where she was a semifinalist once again. Brilliantly enough, she continues to play in the same vein here in the major, starting with wins over Rebecca Peterson and Rebecca Marino.

Vondrousova vs Cirstea Prediction and Tip

On one hand, we have experience but not enough form or momentum. On the other hand, we have a good form but not enough experience.

This is likely to be a three-setter that should ultimately be won by Vondrousova, owing to her slightly better pedigree.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
