Alexander Zverev v Adrian Mannarino Head to Head

There have been five previous meetings between Zverev and Mannarino and the German has won every single time. Three of these five matches came in a span of less than two months last season, at the US Open, Cologne Open and the Paris Masters and Mannarino managed to eke out a set in each one of them.

Zverev Eases Past Cressy

There weren’t too many major dramas for Zverev in his second round match against Maxime Cressy, as he got past the American in straight sets.

Barring the first set where Zverev looked slightly flustered at not having gotten himself an early break, the rest of the match went to script for the German, who needed just over two hours to get past Cressy, 7-5, 6-4, 6-3.

Cressy’s serve and volley style isn’t quite in vogue these days but it did little to surprise the world number seven. And while the American held on to his first five serves in the opening set, the nerves got better of him when it counted – and he was broken in the 11th game.

Something similar happened in the second set as well, with the match going to serve till 4-4 but Zverev managing to find a way to get past his opponent’s serve in the next game before serving it out.

The third – and the final – set became a lot easier a Cressy began to loosen his grip on the match, as he tired out, and Zverev broke him in the third ad the ninth game to seal the deal.

Earlier Zverev had been stretched to the fourth set by Marcos Giron, another American, in the first round, having to come back from being a set down in the match.

Mannarino Equals Best Australian Open Showing

It’s been a few decent months for the 32-year-old Mannarino, who began his run of solid showings in ATP tournaments late last season. A quarterfinalist in Cologne, he went on to make it to the final at Nur-Sultan where he lost to John Millman, entered the third round at the Paris Masters and ended the season in Sofia as a semifinalist.

And while he took some time to get going early in this season, losing in the first round at the Delray Beach Open and then in the second round in the Melbourne tuneup competition last week, Mannarino has finally found his rhythm again.

Having made the third round at the Australian Open just once before this – it came in 2018 – Mannarino is yet to drop a set en route the third round here. He first cruised past Dennis Novak in the first round and then crushed the bookmaker’s favourite Miomir Kecmanovic in the second, both in straight sets to set up this meeting with Zverev.

On paper, Mannarino doesn’t have a lot of weapons to threaten a far superior and fitter Zverev but his fighting qualities could help him push his opponent hard here.

Zverev v Mannarino Prediction and Tip

Zverev should win this to register his sixth victory over Mannarino but it might not end up being too straightforward. The Frenchman could grab a set here.

Tip: Mannarino to win a set: 1/1 (bet365)
