The World No. 28 Ruud won their only meeting on the clay court of Barcelona in 2017, winning the match 6-2, 6-2.

Ruud Sees off Paul Challenge
Norway’s Casper Ruud advanced to the third round of the Australian Open for the first time after he came from a set down to beat American Tommy Paul in the second round on Thursday.
Broken twice by Paul in the first set, the 22-year-old Norwegian made a remarkable recovery to score a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, 7-5 victory in two hours and 43 minutes.
The first Norwegian to win an ATP title and to reach the semifinal of an ATP Masters 1000 event, Ruud is competing at the Australian Open for the third time, having lost in the second round in 2018 and in the first round in 2020.
This year, Ruud started his campaign with a win over Australian Jordan Thompson in the first round. The Norwegian led 6-3, 6-3, 2-1 when the Aussie, struggling with a neck injury, pulled out of the contest.
On Thursday, Ruud won a total of 131 points against Paul’s 117. The Norwegian hit 35 winners to Paul’s 50 but made just 35 unforced errors against his opponent’s 59.
A clay court specialist, Ruud was 0-1 this season before the start of the Melbourne showpiece. He is coming off a successful 2020 season, which saw him win his first ATP title by beating Pedro Sousa in Buenos Aires in February. Two weeks later, he reached another final in Santiago, only to finish runner up to Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild.
His biggest achievement came later in the year, when he reached a maiden Masters 1000 semifinal, by defeating No. 8 Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinal.

Albot Eases Past Aussie Wild Card
After knocking out 12th seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round, Moldova’s Radu Albot picked up his second win of the tournament as he defeated Australia’s Christopher O’Connell in straight sets on Thursday.
In a two-hour-and-20-minute contest, the 31-year-old Moldovan looked in little trouble as he won 76 percent of his first serve and converted four of 10 break points to win 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 (10-8).
The win follows his stunning first-round victory over the 12th seed Bautista Agut. Having lost the first set to the Spaniard in a tiebreak, Albot made a resounding comeback to win 6-7 (1-7), 6-0, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) on Tuesday.
Ranked 85 in the world, Albot came into the tournament on the back of two defeats in 2021. He was 7-12 last year, having reached the quarterfinals in Cologne and Sofia.
As far as Grand Slams go, this is only the third time he has won two matches in a row at a major and will be making his maiden appearance in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday.
