Simona Halep v Iga Swiatek Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between these two, both in the fourth round of the French Open and the match-up is tied at 1-1. The first time they played it was won by Halep in 2019 and the second match, last season was a shock 6-1, 6-0 victory for Swiatek.

Halep Completes Kudermetova Rout

Having been stretched in the previous round by Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic, Halep would have been looking at a far more clinical performance in her third round match against Veronika Kudermetova. Kudermetova herself had been some good form, having reached the final of the Abu Dhabi Open earlier in the season and sent Marta Kostyuk and Varvara Gracheva packing.

Halep played at a very different level to her previous encounter and right from get go.

Needing just an hour and 19 minutes, Halep cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win breaking her opponent thrice without return in the first set before getting some of the fightback from her Russian opponent in the second. Twice Kudermetova was up a break but Halep came back both times and then reeled off four straight games to take the match and seal her fourth round berth.

This win comes on the back of victories over Lizette Carbrera and Tomljanovic in the first two rounds.

Swiatek 10 Majors Matches Without Dropping a Set

It isn’t as if hard court surfaces are Swiatek’s most preferred ones. And not even like the Pole started off the season with an extraordinary performance in the Gippsland Trophy, the tune-up trophy in Melbourne where she was dumped out in straight sets in the second round by Ekaterina Alexandrova.

But come the Australian Open, Swiatek has hardly batted an eyelid in winning her three rounds so far.

She started with a 6-1, 6-3 rout of Arantxa Rus, then defeated Camila Giorgi 6-2, 6-4 before taking down Fiona Ferro in the third round which was played on Friday. The match did last an hour and 26 minutes, but that was down to some poor serving from both players, as nine breaks of serves occurred in the entire match.

In the end both players had the same, seven, unforced errors off their racquets but Swiatek’s 20 winners to her opponent’s seven was the difference and with that, the Pole now has won 10 successive matches at Grand Slams in straight sets.

Can she take down Halep again?

Halep v Swiatek Prediction and Tip

Playing Halep in Melbourne will be a different proposition for Swiatek and while she has shown she can run Halep down, we believe the Romanian will start off a favourite to edge this.

Tip: Halep to win: 8/11 (bet365)
