Andreescu Struggles to Make It Through

Having crashed out in the second round of the Australian Open, the former US Open champion Andreescu opted to participate in this tournament, also in Melbourne before the next portion of the season begins. And after a first round bye, the Canadian was stretched to the hilt by Maddison Brengle, a player who came into the match with odds of 15/4 to surprise her opponent.

In a match that went all the way into the third set, lasting two hours and 43 minutes, Andreescu came through 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3 to seal her third round berth.

This was after the pair exchanged four breaks of serve in the first set, before Brengle raced off to 4-0 lead in the second set. In the final set, the was another exchange of serve by the fifth game but Andreescu finally got herself a decisive break in the eighth game before serving it out in the ninth.

Diyas in Back to Back Three-Setters

Diyas, ranked 83rd in the world, went into both of her first two rounds of this tournament as a favourite, but was stretched to three sets in both.

In the first round, Christina McHale claimed the first set of the match, before Diyas went on to win the next two, while this was followed by a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win for Doyas over Ana Bogdan.

Interestingly, Diyas was one of the very few players in this draw who made it to the third round of the Australian Open She had overcome Tamara Zidansek and Bernarda Pera in those two matches at the season-opening Grand Slam before losing to Garbine Muguruza.

With four wins this season, Diyas is already looking better than she did in the entire of 2020, where she won just one of her last seven matches to round off the season.

Andreescu v Diyas Prediction and Tip

While Andreescu is a favourite again for this one, her performances this season indicate she isn’t fully into her groove and that’s what could happen with the kind of fitness-related issues she has faced. Which is why we think Diyas might have a decent chance here.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
