The list of players for the 2019 Tashkent Open will be updated in the coming days and we will add the same information accordingly on our website. In the meantime, let us take a look at how the tournament has panned out over the years.

The tournament has been a part of the WTA Tour since 1999 and is one of the most anticipated sporting events in Tashkent.

Unseeded Margarita Gasparyan went on to win the Tashkent Open title last year with a very convincing 6-2, 6-1 win over Anastasia Potapova in the final. As luck would have it, Gasparyan faced only one seeded player in the entire tournament, fifth seeded Tatjana Maria, and that turned out to be her toughest winner as she won in a final set tie-breaker.

Interestingly enough, in its long history, no player has neither managed to defend her title nor win the tournament twice. The closest anyone ever came to achieving this feat is the Japanese Nao Hibino, who won the tournament in 2015 and was the runner-up in 2016.

Over the years, the tournament has featured many prominent players like Elena Vesnina, former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka, and the German Sabine Lisicki. However, it is quite interesting to note that none of these players ever managed to win the tournament.

In 2017, the tournament was won by the Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko, who defeated the second-seeded Hungarian Timea Babos in the final in straight sets.

It is worth mentioning that it was Bondarenko’s first WTA singles title since 2008 – a feat that is definitely quite remarkable in its own way. The Ukrainian, who was the 2004 Wimbledon Junior Champion, won her first title in WTA Birmingham 2008 and moved on to spend the better part of the next nine years hunting for another title.

While she is mainly a doubles player, she has defeated many top 10 players like Ana Ivanovic, Venus Williams, Sara Errani, and Agnieszka Radwanska.
