Last year, the top seed was awarded to the Czech Kristyna Pliskova, who also happened to be the defending champion. Placed in her opposite half was the Hungarian Timea Babos, who was accompanied by the likes of Tatjana Maria and Irina-Camelia Begu.
Interestingly, with the sole exception of Babos, all the top seeds succumbed in the early stages. The four players who made it to the semifinals were Babos, the rising Belarusian star Aryna Sabalenka, Vera Zvonareva and the Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko.

Babos edged past Sabalenka 6-1, 6-4 to reach her second consecutive final on the tour that season. On the other hand, Bondarenko moved to the final after her opponent retired in the second set. The final match of the tournament between Babos and Bondarenko was won by Bondarenko in straight sets.
It is worth mentioning that it was Bondarenko’s first singles title since 2008.
As for Babos, she got unlucky for the second consecutive time. Before coming to Tashkent, she played in WTA Quebec City where she lost in the final to Alison Van Uytvanck.
