Out of Form Wang Chasing Second Win of 2021
At this stage last year, Qiang Wang had produced two excellent runs in hard court tournaments. First, there was a breakthrough at the Australian Open.
After six previous visits, she finally managed to reach the second week courtesy of giant-killing upset in third round. Wang famously defeated Serena Williams Down Under 12 months ago. A few weeks later, she made the quarterfinals in Hua Hin.
But the Chinese woman started her 2021 season on downward spiral, losing in the first round in each of the three tournaments she played in. That included the Australian Open, where she was beaten Sara Errani in three sets.
Wang, ranked 34 in the world, posted her first win of the season at last week’s Phillip Island Trophy where she beat 23-year-old Australian Maddison Inglis. But it seems she is short on match fitness, which can be attributed to her little presense on tour last year. With the coronavirus pandemic wiping out nearly the whole tennis calendar, Wang shut down her season shortly after the Fed Cup in March.

Gadecki Mastered Kenin At Phillip Island Trophy
Last week’s Phillip Island Trophy – a WTA 250 event held in the middle of a Grand Slam – did not attract a huge amount of attention. And unsurprisingly, the big names were eliminated in totality, and the headlines were largely unnoticed.
Unseeded Daria Kasatkina won the tournament – ending her personal trophy drought. But the big story revolved around the little-known Olivia Gadecki, the 18-year-old Gold Coast native, and Australia’s very own, who produced the upset of the tournament.
Gadecki had competed admirably the week before at the Gippsland Trophy, losing in three sets to Bernarda Pera on her first appearance in the main draw of a tour-level event. That prompted tournament organizers to hand her another wildcard entrant at the Phillip Island Trophy, where she registered her maiden victory in beating Destanee Aiava.
But nobody could have foreseen the scale of her next performance. Gadecki, as you might have known by now, was unranked coming into 2021. She faced Sofia Kenin in her next match. The American had lost her title defense in Melbourne and rather than retreat, she opted to go into battle.
The 18-year-old Gadecki had spent the off-season hitting with world no.1 Ash Barty, and it can be pointed out she is a quick and intelligent learner. Her court presence defies the logic that she is without a ranking, and her forehand produced the shot that knocked Kenin out of the tournament.
Wang v Gadecki Prediction and Tip
All the pressure is once again on the top ranked player, and this seems to be a position Gadecki is thriving on. Still without a ranking, and only gaining entry with another wildcard, the Australian is primed to spring another upset against an out-of-sorts Wang.
Tip: Gadecki to win: 7/2 (bet365)
