David Goffin v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

There have been six previous matches played between these two players and Goffin leads Struff 4-2 on head to head. Interestingly, Goffin won in their first four meetings while Struff came back to defeat Goffin in the 2019 Barcelona Open and then again at the Cincinnati Masters last year to reduce the deficit.

Goffin Looking to Put Melbourne Behind

Having kick-started the season with a semifinal appearance at the Antalya Open, Goffin would have backed himself to do way better than he eventually did in Melbourne.

For starters, in the tune-up tournament he featured in, the Great Ocean Road Open, Goffin was knocked out in the second round after getting an opening bye, losing to Carlos Alcaraz, who has never been a top-100 player ever in his career.

This was followed by another first round defeat; this coming at the Australian Open to Alexei Popyrin in a match that went to the fifth set. In both these losses, Goffin had gone into the encounter as an overwhelming favourite but fell away easily.

The good news for the Belgian is he has shown signs of returning back to form in Montpellier, where, at the time of writing, he has already reached the semifinal with back to straight-set wins. Can he kick on in Rotterdam as well?

Struff Aims to Break Three-Match Losing Streak

Germany’s Struff seemed to have made a reasonable start to the season but more recently his form has fallen away and he enters this competition on the back of a three-match losing streak. This includes a loss to Andrey Rublev at the ATP Cup, and back to back shocking results at the Australian Open and the Montpellier Open.

In the year’s first major, Struff fell in straight sets to Chris O’Connell, a player who was 3/1 to upset Struff. Something similar happened in the opening round of the Montpellier Open as well, with the 144th-ranked Peter Gojowczyk managing to come through 6-3, 6-4 leaving Struff with a lot more questions than answers.

These form issues haven’t been restricted to this season alone for Struff. Last year, following the resumption of tennis in August, Struff began well at the Cincinnati Open and US Open but then lost eight of the next 11 matches he featured in after that.

Can he change things around against Goffin?

Goffin v Struff Prediction and Tip

Goffin starts off at 1/2 to win this, and given his opponent’s form he could well be in line to carve out a straight set win.

Tip: Goffin to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
