Stefanos Tsitsipas v Egor Gerasimov Head to Head

Their first ever meeting was a part of the Challenger tour, in 2016 and Gerasimov had won that match in three sets indoors. Tsitsipas had obviously become a different player by the time they met again, this time in Dubai in 2019 with the Greek winning that round of 16 match 6-3, 6-1.

Tsitsipas Coming Back from Australian Open Defeat

One of the best comebacks of the season so far has to be Tsitsipas’ victory over Rafael Nadal at the quarterfinal of the Australian Open. Down two sets, the Greek player came through in five sets against the second-ranked player who had toyed with him the last time they had met at the same tournament two years ago.

That win, however, seemed to have taken a lot of Tsitsipas as he fell in the semifinal to Daniil Medvedev in straight sets with even his opponent commenting about the possibility that the Greek was exhausted from the Nadal victory.

Earlier this season, Tsitsipas had won both his ATP Cup matches, defeating Roberto Bautista-Agut and Alex de Minaur but that wasn’t enough for his country to make it to the semifinal.

Tsitsipas enters this tournament with an ordinary record under his belt in the past – he made the round of 16 last season, having not gotten past the first round on three previous occasions. This time around, he starts off as a second seed, and hence will be one of the favourites to go the distance.

Can he start things off with an authoritative performance?

Gerasimov Coming off Solid Montpellier Showing

Also played on indoor hard courts, the Montpellier Open saw a surprise semifinalist in the form of Gerasimov last week. And it wasn’t a case of an easy draw that saw the Belarusian player come through.

Rather, it started with a stiff encounter against Andy Murray where it looked like things could have gone either way in the opening set before Gerasimov took control in the second.

Aljaz Bedene was also sent packing in straight sets and he then came back from a set down to oust Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to reach the semifinals. A fighting performance wasn’t enough to overcome David Goffin but it wasn’t before the 83rd-ranked Gerasimov had stretched his opponent to a three-setter did he get edged out.

Earlier this season, Gerasimov made the third round of the Murray River Open and then fell to Aslan Karatsev in the second round of the Australian Open.

Tsitsipas v Gerasimov Prediction and Tip

It is a mere 1/6 for a Tsitsipas win but if he isn’t too careful, Gerasimov could snatch a set off the Greek here. May be an over games market looks a good bet.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
