Victoria Azarenka v Laura Siegemund Head to Head

The only previous match between these two players had resulted in Siegemund stunning Azarenka at the 2019 Australian Open in the first round.

Azarenka Underwhelming in 2021

After having struggled for a couple of seasons because of her off-court issues, Azarenka had come storming back in 2020, post the pandemic break. First winning the Cincinnati Open when her opponent Naomi Osaka withdrew from the final, she went on to make it to the title-decider of the US Open as well, losing to the Japanese player in the end.

Those two results, along with the quarterfinal at the Italian Open and a final at the Ostrava Open ensured Azarenka was back as one of the top players, in the reckoning to challenge for big-ticket titles.

Unfortunately for her, things have looked shaky at the start of this season. In the three matches played over the two tournaments, Azarenka has won just one, which came in the Grampians Trophy. She retired from her next match, lost in the first round of the Australian Open to Jessica Pegula and coming up against Svetlana Kuznetsova, there were a few question-marks being raised by fans again.

Azarenka had the last laugh though, kick-starting her campaign in Doha with a 6-2, 6-3 win over the Russian veteran and moving into this second round.

Siegemund Shock for Rybakina

We had Elena Rybakina has the favourite for her first round match against Siegemund but the manner in which the German world number 56 showed grit and determination in a tough encounter, she could be a threat here.

In a match lasting two hours and 31 minutes, Siegemund came through 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) to move into the second round.

With two breaks of serve early in the first set, Siegemund ran off to a 3-0 lead only to see it evaporate over the next four games, making it 4-3 in favour of Rybakina. The tie-breaker which followed went neck in neck, with Siegemund once taking a 5-3 lead, and then falling behind 6-5 before converting her second set-point.

Siegemund had the chance to serve out for the match in the second set at 5-3, but dropped her serve that pushed the encounter into a tie-breaker. Rybakina took a 4-3 lead again only to see Siegemund come back to win it 7-5.

Can the German dish out something similar to Azarenka?

Azarenka v Siegemund Prediction and Tip

Azarenka is the most obvious favourite starting out at 2/5 to win this but both, her own start to the season and Siegemund’s first round upset make this seem to be a far more even contest than those odds suggest.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
