David Goffin v Taylor Fritz Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came in the 2019 Cincinnati Masters and that encounter went into three sets before Goffin registered a first round win.

Goffin Wins Tricky Opener
Having come into the tournament on the back of a title win at Montpellier – the fifth of his career – Goffin was a favourite going into the first round but in Filip Krajinovic he had a very tricky opponent. Even the bookmakers hadn’t tipped him to be an overwhelming favourite but in the end, the Belgian came through in straight sets.
That first round match lasted an hour and 23 minutes, and in the end it was just one break of serve in each of the two sets which separated the two players. In the first, Goffin broke at 3-3 while in the second, it was in the fifth game that he forged ahead, never to lose his own serve.
What made the win even more clinical was Goffin never faced a break-point in the entire match, while getting four chances of his own, the reason for which can be found in his superior first serve win percentage – he won 82% of those points.
What Goffin will now want is to shrug off some of his other results this season – he had lost back to back openers in Melbourne, and then again gone down in the second round at Rotterdam despite going into each of those three matches as a favourite.

Fritz Wins Straight-Setter against Sonego
USA’s hard-serving Fritz hasn’t played in a lot of tournaments this season and that could play a part coming into this match, especially given he didn’t go the distance in any of his previous two competitions in 2021.
Starting his campaign at the Murray River Open, Fritz lost to Jeremy Chardy in straight sets in the second round and then fell to Novak Djokovic in a fighting five-setter in the third round.
Which is why, he would be doubly pleased at having won his opener here, and in straight sets too against Lorenzo Sonego. Sonego is one of the players to watch for the future and while Fritz needed time to settle into the contest, he would have relished the prospect of getting nearly two hours of game time.
In match without too many breaking opportunities, Fritz took two of the five he got and was broken once himself before coming through 7-6 (5), 6-4 to seal his place in the second round.
Goffin v Fritz Prediction and Tip
Goffin is 8/13 to win this but Fritz will be a difficult opponent and we think this could be a lot closer than what the odds suggest. Expecting a long-drawn battle here.
