Medvedev Hoping To Return to Winning Ways
Four days away from becoming the World No. 2, Daniil Medvedev will hope to make a quick start in Marseille on Thursday and enter the quarterfinal of the tournament for the third time in his career.
The Russian will also be desperate to get back to winning ways having lost two on the trot, since Novak Djokovic ended his 20-match winning streak at the Australian Open final.
The straight sets walloping in Melbourne final, was followed by a shocking first-round exit in Rotterdam, where Medvedev fell to another Serb, Dusan Lajovic in straight sets.
The top seed, who received a first-round bye in Marseille, will be relieved not to be playing another Serb on Thursday.
The 25-year-old, who ended a sluggish 2020 on a high by capturing back-to-back titles at the Paris Masters (his third Masters 1000 title) and the ATP Finals, began the 2021 season by leading Russia to its first ATP Cup triumph last month. He carried the winning momentum to the Australian Open, reaching his second major final, but a first title remained elusive.
Medvedev will have his eyes fixed on a 10th title this week. But he is yet to go beyond the quarterfinals in Marseille, having reached the last eight in 2017 and 2020.
On Monday, the 16-time ATP finalist will make history, when he becomes the first player other than the “Big four” (Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray) to break into the top two since 2005.

Gerasimov Powers Past Hanfmann
Facing Medvedev in the first round will be Belarus’s Egor Gerasimov, who needed just 54 minutes to dispatch Germany’s Yannick Hanfamann in the first round on Wednesday.
Winning 71% of the total points, the big-serving Belarusian didn’t face a single break point, while he converted five of six to wrap-up the contest 6-2, 6-0.
The win improved the World No. 76 to 7-5 this year.
The 28-year-old, who reached his maiden final in Pune last year, had a great run in Montpellier two weeks ago. Beginning with a win over Andy Murray, he went on to reach the semifinal, before going down fighting to eventual champion David Goffin in a three-set thriller.
His other significant performances this year include a run to the Round of 16 at the Murray River Open and a second round finish for the second consecutive year at the Australian Open.
Medvedev v Gerasimov Prediction and Tip
Despite his slip-up in Rotterdam, Medvedev is the heavy favourite to win this one. Expect the Russian to ease into the last eight with a straight sets win.
Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 2/5 (bet365)
