Denis Shapovalov v Taylor Fritz Head to Head

The world number 11 Shapovalov has beaten Fritz in each of the previous three encounters between the two of them, including in the third round of the US Open last year. That match, however, went to five sets, which is an indicator of how close things could get yet again in this match.

Shapovalov Wins Cagey Affair against Pospisil

Going into his second round match as a favourite, Shapovalov encountered resistance from fellow countryman Vasek Pospisil but still managed to come through in straight sets after winning points at crucial stages of the tournament rather well.

For instance in the first set of this hour and three-fourths long battle, the two players had one break-point missed apiece till 5-5. In the next game, Shapovalov got himself two of them and converted one before serving out for the set.

The second set was similar, in that there were no real opportunities till 3-3. The seventh game was the longest of the match, saw Shapovalov fritter away break-points before converting the break off the fifth. There were no further chances to break for either player as Shapovalov finished off the match off his first match-point.

The Canadian had come into this tournament with a third round appearance at the Australian Open under his belt, where he had lost in straight sets to Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Fritz Comes off a Thriller

It was anyone’s match till Fritz came through in exciting circumstances in his second round match against David Goffin on Wednesday. In a match that lasted for two hours and 37 minutes, Fritz needed three sets and a long tie-breaker in the final set to set up this quarterfinal clash with Shapovalov.

When Fritz raced through the first set with three breaks of serve and then took a 3-1 lead in the second, it looked like the match was headed just one way. Goffin wasn’t done yet as he roared back into contention with a break back in the sixth game and then again in the 12th game to capture the second set.

Fritz had an early break yet again but the script of the second set seemed to be repeating as Goffin broke back in the fourth game. While the American had more chances to break again, the set went into a tie-breaker where Goffin was off to a rollicking start, taking 4-1 lead.

The American clawed back to win five of the next six points, and while he then missed a couple of match-points, he thwarted Goffin from doing so too before converting his third.

Shapovalov v Fritz Prediction and Tip

Shapovalov is 2/5 to win this but we believe it could be a lot closer than that between the two heavy-serving players and might even see a third set.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
