Cristian Garin v Alejandro Tabilo Preview

Local players, world number 22 Garin should not have too many problems when he takes on the 168th-ranked Alejandro in what will be a second round match at the Santiago Open.

Garin hasn’t made much of a start to the season so far, having lost both his opening round matches he has played so far. It started with the Delray Beach Open where he fell to Christian Harrison in a shock result but the bigger surprise came at the Buenos Aires Open when he played Sumit Nagal in his second round match.

Having received a first round bye, Garin fell to a 6-4, 6-3 defeat to the Indian, on a surface he loves to call his own. On the other hand, Tabilo never have seen inside the top 150 of the ATP rankings, he has won nine of the 13 matches he has played this season.

And while this includes qualifiers and Challengers, he would come into this second round encounter with some confidence under his belt unlike Garin.

Garin v Tabilo Tip

Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)

Coria v Varillas Preview

World number 85 Coria faces the 171st-ranked Varillas in the second round of the Santiago Open, and it’s interesting to note how the former is a favourite but not by a lot. He starts off 4/6 to win this, despite having made it as far as the semifinal of the Cordoba Open two weeks ago.

And while Coria lost back to back matches, first in the semifinal in Cordoba and then the first round at the Buenos Aires, to the Cerundolo brothers, he does look like a part on clay.

The Argentine started off this tournament with a stiff win over the favourite Gianluca Mager, beating him 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) and now faces an opponent who is himself a clay court specialist. Varillas made the transition from the lower circuit to here about 12 months or so ago but it’s always fascinating to see how he did in the Challengers – the Peruan was 50-19 on win-loss in 2019 on clay.

Interesting to note, these two have played four times before this, of which Coria’s only win came on the Futures circuit while Varillas won three matches at the Challenger level.

Coria v Varillas Tip

Coria to win: 4/6 (bet365)

Pablo Andujar v Daniel Galan Preview

In what will be their first meeting ever Andujar, ranked 55th in the world, will face the 121st-ranked Galan. Andujar didn’t have the best of starts to the season when he fell in the first round at both, the Delray Beach Open and the Great Ocean Road Open, and it wasn’t till the start of the Australian Open when he finally won a round.

Andujar fell in the second round there but come the clay court swing, one has already seen him make it as far as the quarterfinal at the Buenos Aires Open. This will be his second tournament on clay, and with a first round bye, he will hope he can push on farther than he did last week in Argentina.

Up against him will be Colombia’s Galan, who finally managed to win one in the main draw of an ATP tournament. With just three wins and six losses coming into the tournament – two of those wins having come at the Challenger level – Galan was the second favourite going up against Daniel Altmaier and overturned the loss of the second set in the match to clinch it in three.

Andujar should have very few difficulties here one feels.

Andujar v Galan Tip

Andujar to win: 8/15 (bet365)

Juan Manuel Cerundolo v Roberto Carballés Baena Preview

In what will be the first match between Cerundolo and Baena, the pair meets in the second round of the Santiago Open.

And the 19-year-old Cerundolo might have been knocked out in the first round of the Argentina Open last week but he was coming into that tournament from both, the high and the exhaustion of having played eight matches in nine days prior to that.

In doing so Cerundolo had won the title in Cordoba, beating the likes of Miomir Kecmanovic, Federico Coria and Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

In the first round here, Cerundolo then defeated Gonzalo Lama but the question now is whether he can get past the 97th-ranked Baena. Baena had won just two matches across four tournaments before he overcame Salvatore Caruso in the first round here.

His experience will be the key but the fact is Cerundolo has shown what he’s capable of against those experienced as well.

Cerundolo v Baena Tip

Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
