Ugo Humbert v Arthur Rinderknech Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between Ugo Humbert, the world no.31, and Arthur Rinderknech who is ranked over 100 places below him in the rankings.

Humbert Beats Tsonga

Ugo Humbert mastered his good friend Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the round of 16, 6-3 6-4 to reach his second quarterfinal of the season. 24 hours earlier, the veteran Tsonga, had posted his first main draw win since 2019 when he beat Feliciano Lopez.

After an indifferent start to the year which included a horrendous collapse in the second round of the Australian Open, Humbert is thriving on home soil. Two weeks ago, he made the last eight in Montpellier, and now with a straightforward victory over the 35-year-old legs of Tsonga, he is assured of a place in another quarterfinals.

Humbert produced a stellar performance of serving big, maintaining composure at critical moments and finding his range when opportunities presented themselves. Throughout the contest, Tsonga did not fashion a single break point, with Humbert winning an impressive 89% of first serve points.

The older Frenchman was under constant pressure from his younger compatriot. Humbert secured a break in each of the two sets to close out victory, which perhaps was inevitable given Tsonga’s limited playing time and wins in the past 18 months.

Rinderknech, From Qualifying to Quarterfinals

It is always a success story for the players ranked outside the top 100, and who have for years painstakingly built their careers on the professional circuit, to make an impact on the main tour.

Arthur Rindeknech is one such example this week. The Frenchman, ranked at no.138 in the world, had a heartbreaking start to the year when he fell in third round of qualifying for the Australian Open. But that result only served as a precursor for a substantial run of form in the next couple of months.

Rinderknech whose 2020 season begun with a title win on the Challenger tour, replicated the same feat in Istanbul in late January this year. He beat a decent lineup of Challenger campaigners such as Brandon Nakashima, Jozef Kovalik and Benjamin Bonzi.

In just his second main draw appearance (after Roland Garros 2020), Rinderknech has played from the back foot in Marseille and continues to spring surprises. Victory over the world no.96 Mikhail Kukushkin was a respectable result after he came back from a 1-6 deficit.

The 25-year-old then served impeccably in beating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round. After a slow start, Rinderknech shook off the cobwebs that seemed to affect his agility. He fired 13 aces, and won 87% of first serve points as he fought back to secure a hard-fought three-set win for the second successive day.

This will be Rinderknech’s first tour-level quarterfinal.

Humbert v Rinderknech Prediction and Tip

Rinderknech has shown some resilience in securing two comeback wins in succession. But another slow start against a player of Humbert’s caliber could prove costly. The younger of the two Frenchmen should have an edge in what will be an intriguing contest.

Tip: Humbert to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
