Garbine Muguruza v Barbora Krejcikova Head to Head

This has been the kind of start to the season that Muguruza would be rather unhappy if it didn’t convert into a few titles for the season. Because five tournaments into 2021, Muguruza has already made it to three finals, and while she is yet to win one, the Spaniard looks to be getting closer.
What is quite notable as well is Muguruza’s campaigns haven’t come at low-ranked competitions either, and has already seen her overcome some of the top-most players in the world.
Like at the Yarra Valley Classic in Melbourne, she defeated Sofia Kenin and Marketa Vondrousova, in Doha, she overcame Aryna Sabalenka and Maria Sakkari and now, here in Dubai, Muguruza has already run past Amanda Anisimova, Iga Swiatek, Sabalenka and Elise Mertens.
The last of those names played her in the semifinal on Friday and Muguruza came through 6-4, 7-6 (5) to march into the final. Needing two hours and 11 minutes of some excellent fight put up by Mertens, Muguruza was able to overcome an early break of serve in the first set, and then back to back breaks late in the second set to seal the win.
Even in the second set tie-breaker, Muguruza came back from being 1-3 down to win it 7-5.

Krejcikova to Make Top 40 Debut Next Week
Even if she doesn’t win this one, Krejcikova will be breaking into the top 40 on the WTA charts and that’s thanks to her shock run in this tournament so far. Not too many would have seen this coming, especially not after the kind of start that Krejcikova had had in the season.
Her best showing had come at the Grampians Trophy where she won back to back matches to reach the quarterfinals, but other than that, second round defeats at the Abu Dhabi Open and the Australian Open, to go with the failure to qualify for WTA Doha meant she was probably one of the last names to consider as a finalist.
But aided with wins over Maria Sakkari, Jelena Ostapenko and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first three rounds of the tournament, Krejcikova was able to make it far enough. In the semifinal, the Czech, who had started the week ranked 63rd in the world, made short work of Jil Teichmann, winning 7-5, 6-2, making it her fifth successive straight-set win.
