Jeremy Chardy v Albert Ramos Vinolas Head to Head
Chardy and Ramos Vinolas have played each other five times before this. Incredibly, four of their meetings were contested on clay – the Spaniard’s beloved surface. Ramos Vinolas won all four of those matches on clay.
The French veteran’s sole win in the series was on the indoors of the Paris Masters in 2019, in the qualifying draw.

Chardy Looks to Bounce Back from Doha
It was a little hushed up last week, but Jeremy Chardy lost in the first round of a tournament for the second time this year. It is a rare occurrence; the only other time the Frenchman was beaten so early was in Melbourne at the Australian Open when he had the misfortune of drawing world no.1 Novak Djokovic.
Chardy’s form has been broadly impressive to stay the least. Bar the aforementioned losses in Qatar to Dan Evans (although he made the last four of Doha in doubles), and Djokovic in Melbourne, he has made two semifinals and one quarterfinals in his other tournament participations in 2021.
What makes this achievement even more encouraging is that the 34-year-old has tallied more wins in the early goings of the current campaign than the entirety of the 2020 season.
Chrady has been a mental mess throughout his career, which probably explains why he has never won another ATP title in his senior career since 2009. But so far in 2021, he has won a lot of close contests, with most of his matches decided by tiebreaks.
The world no.54 is 10-1 in tiebreak sets for the season, and you would struggle to find a player who comes close to matching this number in the current season. Chardy’s return to basics has made him one of the players to watch this season. Can he stay true to his roots when he makes his first appearance in Dubai in over five years?

Ramos Vinolas Returns to Hard Courts
Albert Ramos Vinolas has been on the professional circuit for over ten years, but this will be his debut appearance on the fast hard courts of Dubai. Traditionally, the Spaniard has always been a busy fixture in the South American Golden Swing which usually falls early February.
Over the years, the tournaments in South America which are played on Ramos Vinolas’s beloved clay courts, tend to clash in scheduling with the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which partly explains why the Spaniard has never before made the trip to the Emirates’ second city.
But with a slight tweak on the tennis calendar this year as a result of the coronavirus implications, Ramos Vinolas has made one of the most harrowing trips, oscillating from Buenos Aires to Dubai.
Currently ranked 47th in the world, he arrives at the ATP 500 event in decent form after a productive two weeks in Argentina. However, Ramos Vinolas came unstuck against the Cerundolo brothers: first losing to 19-year-old Juan Manuel in Cordoba final, and then to Francisco Cerundolo in Buenos Aires semifinals.
Chardy v Ramos Vinolas Prediction and Tip
Ramos Vinolas starts as the overwhelming underdog in the match, largely due to his exertions in Argentina. There is also the difficult transition from clay to fast hard courts, which is not as simple as it sounds. Chardy has looked in sizzling form on hard courts this year, and it would be a major shock if he falls here.
Tip: Chardy to win: 2/5 (bet365)
