Raonic Looking To Keep Momentum Going

Milos Raonic will play his first match since his fourth round exit of the Australian Open on Tuesday as he begins his Acapulco challenge against Tommy Paul.

The Canadian, who comes into the tournament with a 4-2 record this year, had an extremely positive 2020, going 23-9.

The 23-time ATP finalist has been particularly good since the lockdown ended last year, as he finished runner-up to Djokovic in Cincinnati, reached the semifinals at the Paris Masters and the St. Petersburg Open and the last eight in Antwerp.

Before the lockdown, he had made it to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and the semifinals of the Delray Beach Open.

This year, the 30-year-old went 1-1 at the ATP Cup, winning against Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic and falling to Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in the Round Robin matches.

In the year’s first major in Melbourne, the 2016 Wimbledon finalist, defeated Argentina’s Federico Coria, France’s Corentin Moutet and Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics en route to the Round of 16, where he lost to the eventual champion for the 12th time in his career.

An eight-time winner on the tour, the 6’5” Canadian hasn’t won a title since winning in Brisbane in 2016 and he will be desperate to end the long drought soon.

Paul In Decent Touch

Facing Raonic in the first round will be America’s Tommy Paul, who is 5-4 this year and achieved a career-high ranking of 51 last week, following a good showing in Rotterdam.

Paul, who was a quarterfinalist in Acapulco last year, began the 2021 season at Delray Beach, defeating South Korea’s Ji Sung Nam in the first round before falling to Sebastian Korda in the Round of 16.

At Melbourne-2, he started with a win over Britain’s Cameron Norrie but went down to Australia’s Alexei Popyrin and continued the pattern at the Australian Open, winning his first round against Nikoloz Basilashvili before falling to Casper Ruud in the second round.

The 23-year-old finally won two in a row in Rotterdam, defeating Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the first round and Alexander Bublik in the next to reach the quarterfinal, where he was beaten by Marton Fucsovics.

Yet to reach a tour final, Paul, who won the French Open boy’s title in 2015 and finished runner-up at the U.S. Open boy’s event the same year, has won 10 Challenger and Futures titles.

Last year, playing as a qualifier, Paul defeated Alexander Zverev in the Round of 16 in Acapulco before losing to John Isner in the last eight.

Raonic v Paul Prediction and Tip

This should be a good contest as both players are in decent touch, but Raonic will hold the edge. He is far more experienced and has hit great form since the resumption of the tour last year. Expect Raonic to advance.

Tip: Raonic to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
