It wasn’t the easiest first couple of opponents for Kuznetsova last week when she featured at the WTA Dubai but she did well to beat them both and reach the third round of that competition. There, she went down to Barbora Krejcikova.
What she would like to take out of that showing are the wins over Wang Qiang in the first round and a stunning upset of Elina Svitolina in the second, both of which came in three sets.
Earlier in the season, Kuznetsova who enters this match with a first round bye to her name, had struggled to get going. First round losses at the Grampians Trophy and WTA Doha sandwiched her only victory which came at the Australian Open where she overcame Barbora Strycova in her opener.
She is the fourth seed in this competition and will hope she can take advantage of her draw and get till at least the semifinal. Up against her here is a teenage player who has never entered the top 130 of the rankings before this.

Wang Finally Wins Main Draw Encounter
China’s Wang had gone into her opening round match against Viktoriya Tomova knowing she was up against a player, who like her hadn’t won a main draw match this entire WTA season. And surely enough Wang needed three sets to overcome Tomova in her first round match, in an encounter lasting two hours and 14 minutes.
When Wang Xinyu raced through the first set with two breaks of serve in the fourth and sixth games respectively, it looked like the writing was on the wall. However, Tomova fought back in the second set to first go 4-2 up and then, despite failing to serve out the set, broke Wang yet again in the 12th game to level the match.
In the third set, the fluctuating pendulum kept swinging.
Wang broke her opponent twice to race to a 3-0 lead, and then, neither player held serve over the next five games. The Chinese qualifier had four match-points as Tomova served at 3-5, but missed them all. Tomova broke Wang back but then lost her own serve before she was served out of the encounter.

Kuznetsova should have no real issues dealing with Xinyu Wang in this one and expecting her to come through in straight sets.
